The Rame Lahaj International Opera Festival (RLIOF) is not just a celebration of music, it is a testament to the power of dreams and our vision for Kosovo.
From July 23 to August 2, 2025, RLIOF will present its fifth edition under the theme “Dreams without borders, Opera without walls”, a call to transcend barriers and embrace the transformative power of art.
In a country without an opera house, we didn’t see an obstacle but we saw an opportunity to build something greater. With passion and dedication, we have turned every space into a stage, and crafted melodies that knocked on the hearts of the audience.
“Dreams without borders, Opera without walls” is more than a motto; it is the spirit that guides us. Artists from all over the world have joined us, proving that music is a universal language. It knows no barriers, no borders.
Kosovo is ready. It is worthy. And it needs a home where art can breathe, where talent can flourish, and where future generations can believe that dreams do come true.
As we celebrate our fifth anniversary, we are not stopping. We are dreaming bolder, creating higher, and laying the foundation for the future.
Art doesn’t need borders; it needs hearts that believe. And in this jubilee edition, a journey that has marked the history of operatic art in the country, RLIOF has already built a tradition, laying one more brick each year for the future home of musical art in Kosovo.
The fifth edition of the RLIOF Festival was a captivating celebration of music, featuring five unique concert evenings in Prishtina, along with a special tribute to Nexhmije Pagarusha that traveled to two other cities in Kosovo: Peja and Mitrovica.
Following this was the “Nexhmije Pagarusha” night, where Egyptian mezzo-soprano Gala Elhadidi performed iconic Albanian songs, joined by Kosovar artists Edona Reshitaj, Adhurim Grezda, and Arbëreshe. Accompanied by the Gent Rushi Group and their creative orchestrations of these timeless pieces, we paid tribute to the legendary Artist of Kosovo, Nexhmije Pagarusha.
“Opera Night” – An operatic evening Prishtina will remember for a long time! Rising star of the international opera scene, soprano Marigona Qerkezi, accompanied by pianist Jess Rucinski, delivered a captivating performance where virtuosity and emotion melted into one. From the elegance of Bellini to the vibrant rhythms of Bernstein, her voice filled every corner of the space.
Ensemble Evening – The star of the opera world, mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili performed for the first time in the region, within the framework of the Rame Lahaj International Opera Festival. Her passionate energy combined with her powerful voice, thrilled the audience with a stunning performance. With an incredibly fiery repertoire that made us dream under the melody of Gershwin, the unique rhythms of Piazzolla, and the arias from “Carmen” and “Samson et Dalila” that characterize Rachvelishvili’s free spirit, she also brought us the Georgian music that is so dear to her. Accompanied by the Rame Lahaj Festival Ensemble under the virtuoso conduct of maestro Nikoloz Rachveli, she gave an artistic experience never experienced before by the participating audience.
New Generation – After an intense week of work and dedication, yNew Generation evening marked the conclusion of the Masterclass led by Maestro Vargas and pianist Jess Rucinski, as part of the Rame Lahaj International Opera Festival. Young artists from around the world and undoubtedly talents from Albania and Kosovo, stayed in Prishtina to learn, explore and be inspired by the Maestro’s experience and mastery.
Gala Night “Rame Lahaj & Friends” – closed the jubilee edition of RLIOF with greatness, turning “Skënderbeu Square” into an open stage where opera conquered the hearts of thousands of participants. Extraordinary artists such as soprano Nino Machaidze and bass Dario Russo brought unforgettable emotions, under the direction of maestro Roberto Rizzi Brignoli and accompanied by the RTSH Symphony Orchestra. Our tenor Rame Lahaj gave us a special repertoire, from world arias to the most beloved Albanian songs, in an evening that was crowned with powerful emotions and endless ovations. One of the highlights was the presentation of the postage stamp with the portrait of Rame Lahaj by the Kosovo Post. Also present was Lorik Cana, who presented the “Udha” project for the Arbëresh heritage, while singer Angela Dell’Aquila performed “Moj e bukura More” in an unrepeatable duet with Lahaj. Under the motto “Dreams without borders, Opera without walls”, RLIOF showed that great art knows no borders, it unites people, inspires them and builds bridges for the future.
“I am very happy that this year, with the unanimous support of the municipality of Prishtina, we are sponsoring the first Opera Festival in the country and region, the Rame Lahaj International Opera Festival. I don’t have much to say about our artist, Rame Lahaj, because he has been recognized worldwide, and I have personally attended his performances in Berlin and London. But what is most important to me, Prishtina, and Kosovo, and why we will always support it, is the investment in the educational platform designed for young lyrical talents and their careers, as well as possibilities of their entry into the international arena. This year’s RLIOF will feature 5 concert evenings in which, in addition to opera stars from around the world, authentic Albanian music will play an important role in the festival’s repertoire. Dear Rame Lahaj, Prishtina and your hometown welcome you and your international colleagues.”
Perparim Rama, Prishtina’s Mayor, Patron of RLIOF Festival
“There is extraordinary will within the community, and it must be realized. The Rame Lahaj International Opera Festival is one way to keep an art alive and to ensure that we can create conditions, capacities, and continuity. Which is not just an event, so we cannot reduce it to just one event, because the event is also extraordinary, very beautiful, and we all enjoy it, with renowned names who come to perform on Prishtina’s stage. But above all, what Rame does is international visibility, it is an incentive for institutions, it is also a school for young cadres. To put it another way, a multidisciplinary approach to ensuring that on the day when we have the opera and ballet theater, we have all the required capacities to always fill those opera theater halls with great programs and audiences.”
Hajrullah Ceku, Minister of Culture in Kosovo
“Rame Lahaj’s International Opera Festival (RLIOF) is a great cultural event. With his magnificent voice, his outstanding international prestige and last but not least with his big heart, Rame Lahaj has put Pristina on the international opera map. At the same time the RLIOF opened up the world of opera to a wider public in Rame’s native Kosovo. In addition to excellent opera performances of internationally renowned singers, the Festival offers young talented artists not only the opportunity to improve their skills in masterclasses, but also to present their skills to a larger audience. The Embassy of Switzerland is pleased to support the RLIOF again this year. ”
Thomas Kolly, Ambassador of Switzerland to the Republic of Kosovo
“It is an important mission since it allows young talents to exchange experiences with students from other nations, as is the case with Italy. Traveling and meeting other experts from various nations is a fundamental enrichment, which is why we support Rame Lahaj’s project, because this is how tomorrow’s talents are developed. Of course, it remains critical that Kosovo’s future talents, due to the Rame Lahaj Foundation’s efforts, have an appropriate venue in which to express themselves here in Kosovo as well.”
Antonello De Riu, Italian Ambassador to Kosovo
“I could feel something special with his [Rame’s] personality and I found so many familiar aspects of myself in him. That’s why I immediately accepted his invitation to come here and give this masterclass. When I arrived here I was amazed first. It is the first time I’m here and I am absolutely impressed by this country. I am thrilled to experience your country and your beautiful city in this time of creation and growth. Up to now I’ve seen very good voices, excellent voices. Some of them really top voices. I am sure that they’re going to become giants in the concert and achieve very good results. ”
Francisco Araiza, Mexican operatic tenor. Prishtina 2023
